Sustainability’s most basic definition is the method of using resources so that the resource is not depleted or permanently destroyed. But in today’s terms it encompasses many aspects regarding energy and the environment – renewable energy, green building, water and waste management, clean technology and expense reduction.

In recent years, sustainability has moved to the forefront of agendas for many groups – businesses, government and communities. Shifting social attitudes, government mandates and price volatility of utilities are all factors leading to the growing effort to become greener.
This concentration on how to reduce environmental impact while creating sustainable results has gained significant placement in the collective consciousness of the nation and in Indiana. In response, many organizations integrate their own energy and environmental sustainability strategies into their corporate social responsibility goals.
For small to big organizations alike making the move toward sustainability can be a daunting task. Budgets can be limited, resources may be thin and expertise may be far from developed. And in a state like Indiana, the support from local governments and other businesses may be far from what is necessary to be successful.
Yet, as more and more news reports, research papers and other states embrace making energy and environmental sustainability commonplace, Indiana organizations need to respond to maintain that edge of competitiveness.
This is how the INdiana Sustainability Alliance is bringing value to organizations and individuals all across the Hoosier state.
